A School In The Hudson Kitchen

Did you know? According to Jordan's 1913 history of the Juniata Valley, George D. Hudson built the first hotel at Three Springs, and the first school was taught in its kitchen. Jordan says the town was laid out in the spring of 1843 and was first called Scottsville, for General Winfield Scott.

Africa's 1883 county history says Hudson built the pioneer hotel in 1849 and 1850. It was a stone mansion at the southeast end of town, kept as a hotel until 1876 or 1877, when the Bowser House was built and the Hudson House was given up as a hotel. Africa says the first school in the vicinity was taught in the old Hudson House kitchen, a short distance east of the borough. But it also says the pioneer school house there was built in 1838, more than ten years before Hudson's hotel, so its old Hudson House may not be the hotel.

The first resident physician was Dr. Robert Baird, who came in 1853 and stayed two years.
