Three Springs borough
Three Springs Was Scottsville
Did you know? Three Springs was laid out on April 5, 1843, and it was not called Three Springs. It was named Scottsville, in honor of General Winfield Scott, and a post office of that name was established.
The trouble was that there was another post office of the same name in Pennsylvania, and it was older. Many letters were miscarried and finally lost.
A new name had to be adopted for the office, and the name Three Springs was reported to the Post Office Department in Washington. When the town was incorporated as a borough on November 10, 1869, its people adopted the post office's name for the borough as well. Even so, Africa's 1883 county history remarks, the office had never been kept much nearer the springs it was named for than it was in 1883.
