Spruce Creek Country Store

Not confirmed open this year

A country store beside the Spruce Creek Tavern that sells hand-dipped ice cream, nostalgic candy and everyday essentials in Spruce Creek.

The Spruce Creek Country Store sits beside the Spruce Creek Tavern in Spruce Creek, near the Juniata River. Owner Troy Thomason leases the space from the tavern's owners. The Huntingdon Daily News reported the store as new in July 2025.

The shelves carry nostalgic candies, coconut slices, oatmeal cream pies, pickles in a pouch, a cigar case and Reedsville Creamery milk. Hand-dipped ice cream is sold from a counter, and lottery and PA Skill machines stand inside. Live bait is not yet available, but the owner hopes to add it.

The article gives the hours as 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It was first published in July 2025 and updated in August 2026. The owner says the goal is connection rather than profit, and he stocks what people need so they have a reason to come back.

Overlook and scenic drive

Indian Lookout

Not confirmed open this year

A short walk from a Colerain Road pull-off to a cliff-edge overlook on the Yellow Arrow Trail, with a wide view north and west.

Indian Lookout is an overlook on a rocky outcropping at the edge of a cliff, near the top of a mountain in Rothrock State Forest. It sits on the Yellow Arrow Trail, which starts at a large parking area and trailhead just past the crossing of Spruce Creek on Colerain Road. A stone pillar fence stands at the edge as a reminder to keep back.

From the upper trailhead on Colerain Road, across from the pull-off, the overlook is a little over a tenth of a mile on foot, with a final climb of about 25 feet. The route from the lower trailhead is a little less than a mile and climbs about 700 feet, which Uncovering PA calls very steep. The view runs north and west.

Uncovering PA calls Colerain Road a well-maintained dirt road that can be narrow in spots and has a few potholes. In October 2020, Jim Cheney drove it as far as the turnaround point in a regular car.

Not confirmed open this year

A roadside overlook on Colerain Road, off Route 45 near Spruce Creek, with a view west over the valley.

Spruce Creek Lookout is a roadside overlook on Colerain Road, the road that leaves Route 45 north of Spruce Creek. It sits at a hairpin turn about 1.3 miles up the road, where there is room to pull off and get out of the car. Jim Cheney's Uncovering PA article places the overlook in Rothrock State Forest.

From the pull-off the view runs west across the valley far below. Cheney drove the road in a regular car in October 2020. He found it well maintained but narrow in spots, with a few potholes, and he said conditions were a bit rough at this spot during his visit.

Spruce Creek railroad tunnel

Not confirmed open this year

A railroad tunnel between Barree and Spruce Creek in Huntingdon County; public access is not yet confirmed.

A railroad tunnel lies between Barree and Spruce Creek in Huntingdon County. The Daily News chose it for its What and Where Wednesday feature, published March 27, 2019, and asked readers to guess its location. Readers sent correct guesses, and the paper reported the result on April 3, 2019.

OpenStreetMap has two entries, named Spruce Creek Rail Tunnel East Portal and Spruce Creek Rail Tunnel West Portal. Both were entered in February 2018 and carry the tag tourism=attraction. The map entries give no operator or contact tag. The Daily News item does not name the tunnel, so the link between it and these entries is an inference from location.

Both map entries carry the tag opening_hours=24/7, a user-entered tag rather than a checked schedule. Apart from that tag, we found no hours, admission price or visiting rules for the tunnel on any page we opened. Neither the Daily News item nor the map entries say whether the public may enter or view the tunnel, so this entry records a location and nothing else.
