The Alexandria Memorial Library sits at 313 Main Street in Alexandria, Pennsylvania. The Visitors Bureau says the library has served the community since 1900, with new books to find and older favorites to pick up again. Visitors can sit in its lounge areas, and local community organizations use the building for their gatherings.

The children's department has a wide selection of books and a puppet theatre where young readers can show their talents. A Huntingdon Daily News item of 7 January 2026 carried the library's notice of a puzzle derby at the Alexandria Fire Hall, a fundraiser for the library's ongoing programs and building needs.

Each year, area elementary school children decorate pumpkins that are stacked into a totem pole in front of the library, a Hartslog Day tradition that dates to 1974. The Daily News also reports that local citizens connected to the library set up the Hartslog Heritage Museum in 1975.

Hartslog Day

Seasonal

Annual harvest festival in Alexandria, held the second Saturday of October, with a parade, crafts, pumpkins and food.

Hartslog Day is the harvest festival of Alexandria. The Huntingdon County Historical Society lists it each October on the second Saturday, describing pumpkins, handmade crafts from vendors, children's activities and food. A Daily News preview dated October 9, 2026 gave the date of the 50th festival as Saturday, October 10, with a parade down Main Street at 9 a.m.

The name comes from Hart's Log. A Daily News student column dates that history to 1744, when a trader named John Hart used a hollowed-out log as a feeding trough for his pack horses, according to local history. Alexandria was laid out into town lots in 1793, and a replica of Hart's log was set in place two days before the 50th festival.

The Hartslog Heritage Museum, founded in 1975, fills the second floor of the Alexandria Memorial Public Library. The museum opens the second Sunday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. or by appointment, and the society gives (814) 207-1410 for tour appointments.
