Saint Mary's Covered Bridge

Not confirmed open this year

A covered bridge over Shade Creek beside Route 522, a few miles south of Orbisonia, across from a Catholic church.

Saint Mary's Covered Bridge carries traffic over Shade Creek beside Route 522, across the road from Saint Mary's Catholic Church. Uncovering PA's Jim Cheney describes it as painted a lighter red with white accents, and says it keeps a peaceful feel beside a very busy highway. PA Bucket List says it is built with Howe trusses and is owned and maintained by Huntingdon County.

Sources disagree on the build year. A bronze plaque reads 1889, according to the Huntingdon History Research Network, and the National Register record lists 1889 as a significant year. The 1991 Historic American Engineering Record inventory gives 1896, citing county commissioners' minutes. The National Register listed the bridge on March 20, 1980.

Uncovering PA (2015, updated 2021) describes parking as a paved pull-off along Route 522 and warns that the road is very busy. A PA Bucket List page last modified in September 2023 describes the bridge as open to vehicle traffic. In July 2026 the Huntingdon Daily News reported that the county commissioners approved a state grant application to restore the bridge.
