Green Heron Farm

Not confirmed open this year

An organic farm on Elliots Run Road in Springfield Township that its listing says sells produce by subscription or from the farm.

Green Heron Farm is an organic farm on Elliots Run Road in Springfield Township, with a Three Springs mailing address. A 2023 StateCollege.com directory entry says the farm has been growing and selling organic produce since 1984.

A StateCollege.com search excerpt of that 2023 listing also says the farm's first market, in Huntingdon, could not sustain the business, so the farm set up at the Tacoma Park Farmers' Market near Washington, D.C. The Visitors Bureau listing still says produce is available year-round by subscription or directly from the farm, but it names no stand or hours.

The same listing says the farm is home to Barn Door Artisans, a family art collaboration offering wood products and ceramic pieces. The farm also rents a cabin, Sassafras Hollow, through Airbnb from April through October. The listing prints no hours and directs readers to call or visit its website.

Standing Stone Trail

Not confirmed open this year

A long-distance footpath whose Huntingdon stretch climbs Jacks Mountain, passes the Thousand Steps and reaches Greenwood Furnace.

The Standing Stone Trail is a long footpath through the ridge and valley section of the Appalachians. The club says it links the Tuscarora Trail in the south with the Mid State Trail in the north. Heading north, it passes Cowans Gap State Park, Rocky Ridge Natural Area, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Alan Seeger Natural Area and Detweiler Run Natural Area.

The club's map index places Meadow Gap, the point on this record, between Little Aughwick Creek and Hoopers Gap. Farther north the trail climbs Jacks Mountain and passes the Thousand Steps, 1,037 rocky steps built into the mountainside by quarry workers in the 1930s. From Greenwood Furnace, the Greenwood Spur runs north to the Mid State Trail at Detweiler Run.

The club's PDF maps page describes nine maps. Its alerts page warns that many sections lie in active in-season hunting zones, says to wear blaze orange from November 15 to December 15, and notes that parts of sections 5 and 6 lie on private land that permits trail use and contains active hunting camps.

State Game Lands No. 81

Not confirmed open this year

State game land of 4,037 acres in Huntingdon and Fulton counties, north of Burnt Cabins, managed for hunting and recreation.

State Game Lands No. 81 is one of the tracts the Pennsylvania Game Commission owns and manages. Its map, revised in June 2020, gives the land as 4,037 acres in Huntingdon and Fulton counties, north of Burnt Cabins.

The map describes the terrain as mountainous and heavily forested. It lists deer, turkey, squirrel and ruffed grouse as the primary game. The map says state game lands are purchased, managed and maintained primarily for outdoor recreation in the form of sport-hunting. The Commission's state game lands information page gives the primary purpose as managing wildlife habitat and providing opportunities for lawful hunting and trapping, with other recreation permitted as secondary uses.

The map also encourages boating, fishing, hiking, birdwatching and nature study on the land. It says state game lands are open for general use year round, with few exceptions. Across all state game lands, the Commission says more than 400 miles of roads open seasonally, and its Mapping Center shows where.
