The Mount Union Invitationals

The American Legion Country Club's timeline gives the Mount Union Invitational advertised in 1962 and the June Invitational begun in 1975 separate entries. It says open and invitational events drew professionals and amateurs to Mount Union in the 1950s and 1960s. It also says the 1962 advertisement billed that year's event as the twelfth annual, with $3,000 in prizes and sponsors from businesses across the region.

The club dates the June Invitational to June 1975 and calls that first event a two-person best-ball. It says early newspaper coverage called it the "Mount Union Invitational Best-Ball of Partners" tournament. A firsthand written account shared with the club in June 2026 recalls that the idea was to bring in income for the pro shop, with a tournament patterned after one at Park Hills, and that the golf committee approved it.

The club's table of past champions gives 121 teams, or 242 golfers, in 1979, and 128 teams from Pennsylvania and neighboring states in 1982. In 1989, the table says, a Sunday night storm closed the course, and the final hole was scored as par for all groups. In 2020 a COVID-19 delay pushed the tournament to August, and it was briefly renamed the ALCC Invitational. The club counts 2024 as the 50th playing. In 2026 spring weather delays cut it from two days to a single 18-hole round.

Checked against the record. Checked on 1 November 2026. Everything here comes from the club's own pages, and we did not see the 1962 advertisement or the Daily News report of June 21, 1975 that the club cites. The Daily News is not in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Archive. The "twelfth annual" label would point to a start around 1951 only if the event ran every year, so the story gives no start year. How the earlier event relates to the one begun in 1975 stays open. The founding account is one person's memory, written about 50 years later, and it differs from other names linked to the early event. The story therefore names no organizers, and it names no winners, because we could not confirm which of them are still living.
