Six Hundred Wins On The Mat

Mount Union's wrestling program won for the first time in December 1954, according to a 2017 article in The Sentinel of Lewistown. The school was then called Captain Jack High School.

Win number 600 came 63 years after the first. The Sentinel reported on December 28, 2017, that the Mount Union Trojans had beaten Claysburg-Kimmel 48 to 22 that Wednesday evening in an Inter-County Conference match. Alumni came back for it, and a food drive held along with the match took in more than 600 items. The paper said the program had had only four coaches since 1964, and it placed Mount Union with Bald Eagle Area, State College and Blairsville as the only District 6 schools with 600 or more wins at that time. The coach credited consistency.

The state results are kept by PA-Wrestling.com. At Hersheypark Arena in Hershey on March 18 and 19, 1982, a Mount Union junior won the 126-pound title at the PIAA Class AA championships. He and the Mahanoy wrestler he met in the final had each come in at 31 and 0, and he won 5 to 3 to finish 35 and 0. Mount Union finished eighth in the team scoring with 25 points. A year later, on March 17 and 18, 1983, he came back as a senior at 32 and 0 and reached the 132-pound final, where he lost to a Mifflinburg wrestler 10 to 9.

The site's list of state champions runs from 1938 to 2026 and shows six titles for Mount Union: 1982, 1987, two in 1988, 2003 and 2018. The 1982 title is the earliest Mount Union entry on that list. The site's placing pages also show Mount Union wrestlers second in Class AA at 138 pounds in 1984 and at 119 pounds in 1986.

Checked against the record. The first win, the 600th win, the four coaches and the District 6 count all come from one Sentinel article of December 28, 2017, and the counts are as of that date. We have not seen a 1954 report of the first win. The state results come from PA-Wrestling.com's brackets and results sheets, and we did not see a champions list from the state athletic association itself, so the 1982 title is the earliest on the site's list and we claim no more than that. Individual wrestlers and coaches are not named. Searches of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Archive found nothing on the program in these years, and we could not read The Daily News of Huntingdon, so the coaching records and league titles of the 1970s and early 1980s are left out until they can be read.
