Mount Union's State Baseball Titles

Mount Union won the Pennsylvania state baseball championship in 1988, beating Oley Valley 6 to 2 in the Class 2A final at Shippensburg University. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, or PIAA, has listed its baseball champions since 1977, and 1988 is the first year Mount Union appears on that list as champion.

Mount Union had reached the state final once before. In 1980 it lost to West Perry 2 to 0, also at Shippensburg University. On the way to the 1988 title the team beat Union City 9 to 0, Elderton 8 to 7 and Ford City 10 to 6. Ford City had won the 2A title the year before.

Mount Union won again in 1993, beating Wyomissing 14 to 8, and in 1995 it beat Lampeter-Strasburg 5 to 0. The Sentinel of Lewistown reported in 2013 that the team's coach had led the Trojans to the state championship in 1988, 1993 and 1995.

Mount Union lost the 1996 final to Tri-Valley, 7 to 1. The Sentinel reported in 2025 that the coach retired in 2016 but stayed on as an assistant coach. It also reported that he had spent 43 years coaching and teaching, and that his career record was 767 wins and 208 losses.

Mount Union won again in 2019, beating Notre Dame-Green Pond 9 to 1 in the Class 3A final. It reached the state final once more in 2023 and lost to Bald Eagle Area 11 to 0.

The PIAA's records through 2024 show seven state finals for Mount Union, four of them won, and 49 wins against 25 losses in state tournament games.

Checked against the record. We checked the scores, years and game sites against the PIAA's own lists of state champions and a PIAA records booklet posted on a District 3 records site. A District 6 list of state finals agrees with them on each Mount Union final it names, and the state lists give the 1988 final as 6 to 2. The coach's 2016 retirement, his 43 years of coaching and teaching, and his 767 wins and 208 losses come from The Sentinel's 2025 article. The 2013 Sentinel article names the same three title years the PIAA records show. Two things stay open. A District 6 list of district champions does not show Mount Union for 1995, though the state records give it that year's state title, and we have not seen the 1995 bracket that would explain the gap. We also have not seen a newspaper game report for any of these finals, so the game details come from state records rather than a reporter. The coach and the players are not named.
