Raystown Lake's Monster Legend

Did you know? The Army Corps of Engineers does not call Raystown Pennsylvania's largest lake. It calls it the largest lake located entirely in Pennsylvania. Those are two different claims and the difference is the whole sentence.

The Corps describes Raystown as 8,300 surface acres of clear water surrounded by 21,000 acres of forested mountain slopes, built and managed for flood damage reduction, recreation, natural resource opportunities and hydropower.

The federal dam inventory lists Raystown Dam at 225 feet high, holding back as much as 871,000 acre feet on the Raystown Branch of the Juniata, in Huntingdon County, completed in 1973.

And then there is the other thing people say about that water. Local legend puts something living down in it. We are calling that exactly what it is, a legend. We could not find a published source for when the story started or where the name came from, and we are not going to make one up.

So help us out here.

Nothing further from the county histories. The six histories held here end in 1913 and this story belongs to 1973, so there is no passage in them that bears on it. Rather than attach an unrelated page and let it look like corroboration, this story stands on the sources listed below.

Checked against the record. 1. "Pennsylvania's largest lake" is wrong as written. The Army Corps of Engineers' own Raystown page says "the largest lake located entirely in Pennsylvania." Dropping "entirely" turns a true, careful claim into a false one, and it is the kind of thing a reader from Erie corrects in public. Same family as "only one left" versus "only one ever." The post now quotes the Corps' hedge instead of upgrading it, and makes the distinction the hook. 2. "since its creation in 1974" is corrected to 1973. The National Inventory of Dams, the Corps' own federal dam register, gives Raystown Dam a Year Completed of 1973. 3. "has spawned lake monster folklore since its creation in 1974" is CUT. That is a duration claim, and duration claims need their own source exactly like scope words do. No published source found for when the story began or where the name came from. Rather than hedge it or drop the legend entirely, the original says plainly that the check could not source it and asks the readers who would actually know. 4. "Folklore or fact? Nobody knows." is removed. "Nobody knows" is itself a claim about the state of knowledge. Sourcing note: the Corps' Raystown page is Akamai-blocked to direct fetch. Read through the Internet Archive snapshot of 2020-08-14. The National Inventory of Dams was read from the Corps' own public nationwide CSV export, which needed no workaround at all.
