'Over 36,000 Americans never came home' is right, and it is right under BOTH of the competing official figures: 36,574 in-theater deaths as revised in 2021 (33,739 battle deaths plus 2,835 other deaths), and the 36,634 names inscribed on the Wall of Remembrance unveiled in July 2022. Because the exact total is genuinely disputed, 'over 36,000' is the only form of this number that cannot be falsified. THE NUMBER TO NEVER USE: 54,246. That figure is engraved on the memorial and is still repeated constantly, but it counts US military deaths WORLDWIDE during the war period, including 17,672 outside the Korea theater. Using it for Korean War dead overstates by about 50 percent, and a veteran or a Gold Star family member will know. ALSO CONFIRMED: June 25 1950 as the date North Korean forces crossed the 38th Parallel, roughly three years of fighting to the armistice of July 27 1953, and 76 years from 1950 to the post's 2026 date. Fix on any reuse. This one will be reused every June 25, so fix it once in the source file rather than every year. WORTH KNOWING FOR ANY FUTURE VERSION: the Wall of Remembrance was built from a Defense Department list that turned out to contain roughly 1,015 spelling errors and 245 names of servicemembers who died in circumstances unrelated to the war. If a local family ever says a name is wrong or missing on that wall, they are very possibly right, and that is a real and humane story for this county.
